The first result of WTTC’s sustainability activities was published under the name WTTC Basics (Hotel Sustainability Basics) on the occasion of ITB Berlin 2023. A set of globally recognised criteria has been established, which is recognised by the entire hotel industry and should be applied as a minimum by a responsible and sustainable tourism operator. The system is supported by the major hotel chains of WTTC: Accor, Jin Jang, Louvre Hotels, Melia Hotels, Meininger and Radisson. The 12-criteria rating system was developed after a survey of 27,000 accommodation providers. Almost 100% of the respondents met at least one of the criteria, of which 96% had, for example, textile reuse programmes in place. Anyone who meets eight of these criteria, and declares that they are actively working towards meeting the other criteria, can be officially Basics Sustainability Certified. The system was developed in partnership with Green Key and SGS. Greenview, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and Trip.com also contributed to the development. This is the first major step by WTTC towards the implementation of the Net Positive Hospitality long-term programme (WTTC).
