The European Tourism Manifesto has been launched, in which more than 70 organisations representing the European tourism sector present their priorities for the next legislative cycle. HOTREC has been involved in the drafting of these priorities. The aim is to promote the development of the travel and tourism sector along the following pillars:
- Decarbonisation: The sector is committed to fighting climate change, supporting the green transition and science-based targets. This requires systemic changes in travel, tourism, construction and food production.
- Smart EU funding: The EU should develop a strategy that takes into account the needs of the sector and the economic, geopolitical and social benefits. This requires a coordinated policy approach and smart financing to support adaptation and innovation.
- Flexible connectivity and free movement: Flexibility in tourism and open borders are of strategic importance. To ensure this, adequate border infrastructure, digitised visa procedures and updated contingency plans are needed.
- Vocational training and attractiveness of the sector: To support innovation and adaptation, businesses and destinations must be provided with the right tools. It is important to promote skills development, destination management and digitalisation.
The Tourism Manifesto also calls for the appointment of a new Commissioner for Tourism, the creation of a Tourism Taskforce in the European Parliament and the organisation of annual Ministerial Meetings in the Council. The Manifesto aims to support the sector through coordinated EU action, ensuring effective management of investment, stimulating innovation and reducing negative impacts (hotrec.eu).
