The rapid development of technology is reshaping the travel and tourism industry, according to a recent report. A joint study by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) and Trip.com Group examines sixteen technologies that cluster around four main trends: digital innovation, financial technology, the future of mobility and breakthrough developments. The report aims to show how these technologies can change travel habits and create opportunities for tourism businesses.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the key drivers of digital evolution, with 94% of global business leaders identifying it as the key to future organisational success. 5G and 6G networks, as well as low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, are taking the travel experience to a new level, providing fast and continuous connectivity for tourists. Meanwhile, super-applications will integrate travel-related services on a single platform, facilitating bookings, transport planning and customer interactions.

Air transport is also undergoing a transformation: the introduction of advanced air mobility (AAM) and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft could revolutionise urban transport. Dubai, for example, could introduce air taxis by 2026, taking passengers from the airport to the city centre in just a few minutes. The concept of smart cities is also emerging, as innovative transport solutions, energy-efficient infrastructure and smart urban systems can all contribute to sustainable and experiential tourism.

The report not only looks at current trends, but also prepares companies for the potential scenarios that could be expected in the next decade. 91% of travel companies are already planning to increase their investment in technology, recognising that innovation is not only transforming the way the industry works, but also taking travellers’ experiences to a whole new level (World Travel & Tourism Council).
